In Riptide, you want different weapon types (blades, blunt, hand-to-hand, and firearm) to "master" your weapon category skills.
It helps to have a full arsenal of different weapons at your disposal so that you can cycle their usage and avoid inadvertently disabling a weapon due to overuse. Remember to preview the weapon you plan to create like Kingdom Under Fire Circle of Doom's "item synthesis", the previews accurately forecast your creation! Keep that in mind as you gain levels in Dead Island, as you will constantly be rotating out older weapons for better ones until you hit the level maximum. Despite the earlier exceptional Crowbar being more valuable, the higher level "Used Crowbar" will probably do more base damage (press START to view the item's details, not just its DPS/damage per second).
You keep this weapon and after a earning two or three levels, you find a "Used Crowbar" that is common (white lettering). For example, let's say you pick up a Crowbar that is rated "exceptional" according to the game. Note that the quality of a weapon or item is not a clear indication of how effective an item is.
